Thermal imaging of downlight covers highlight the efficiency benefits of the Downlight Mitt compared to a conventional install with a plastic downlight covers. Most plastic downlight covers out there do a great job at stopping draughts, but they are designed to leak heat into the loft area, as they are designed to be used with halogen Downlight globes. There are no insulative benefits and downlights are still a serious point of failure where losses in heating and cooling occur due to air tightness & Thermal Bridging issues. All the Efficiency Matrix Downlight covers focus on weak points in your insulation.
The below photo’s were taken with the light fitting operating for 1 hour
* Note the Temperature of the Iron core transformer with the Downlight Mitt.
Conventional downlights work by ventilating into the ceiling while producing light and heat in the living area, this creates a convection current, sucking heat out of your living area and into the roof.
Temperatures of the Efficiency Matrix 35W lamp installed with downlight Mitt VS Plastic cover for 1 hour. The temperatures of the lamp and fitting are roughly equal.
“Plastic downlight covers reduce the effect but the Downlight Mitt stops the convection current in its tracks.”
